Beavers open indoor season at Washington Invite
January 25, 2017 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State track & field team opens the 2017 indoor season this weekend at the Washington Invitational at the Dempsey Indoor Center.
Competition starts on Friday and continues through Saturday afternoon. It is the first of three meets in an indoor season that culminates with the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Feb. 24-25, also at the Dempsey Indoor Center.
"We had a great indoor season in 2016, the first time we fielded a comprehensive indoor team, and we are excited to continue to build on the momentum we created last winter," OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said.
"We established five school records and 32 current all-time indoor times or marks last season," Sullivan added. "This weekend is a great opportunity for us to keep re-writing our record book as we continue to grow our program."
OSU established indoor school records in the 200 meters (Venessa D'Arpino, 24.70); the long jump (Jasmin McKenzie, 19-3.25); the triple jump (Lucinda Howard, 38-8.75); the pole vault (Helen Ann Haun, 12-1.50) and the weight throw (Melissa Ausman, 53-11.25) in 2016.
Every record-holder except Ausman is back in 2017. D'Arpino also set the indoor 400 mark (55.60) in 2015.Â
Numerous Beavers will make their collegiate or OSU debuts this weekend, led by graduate transfers Rachel Proteau (high jump) and Madelayne Varela (triple jump, long jump). Proteau transferred from Kansas State, Varela from Oregon; each was a three-time letter-winner at her previous school.
Freshmen first-time competitors are Lindsay McShane and Sydney Guthrie-Baker (weight throw, shot put); sprinter Marin Zaccheo (60, 400) and distance runner Lexi Reed (3,000), a starter on the cross country team this past fall.
"Rachel and Madelayne are proven performers at the college level," Sullivan said. "And we are eager to see how the freshmen will perform in their first meet."
The Beavers are idle next weekend and will resume competition at the Husky Classic, set for Feb. 10-11 at the Dempsey Indoor Center.
