Gulich tallies fifth career double-double
CORVALLIS – The No. 11/12 Oregon State women's basketball team shot 48.3 percent Friday evening, as it cruised past Utah 70-44 at Gill Coliseum.
"We knew the key tonight was going to be loosening up their defense," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "For part of the first half it was tough to get good looks, but then we started to settle in. I loved the way our team moved the ball, saw the floor and made shots. Overall it was a great performance and a great win."
Junior Marie Gulich tallied her fifth career double-double, going for 14 points on 7-for-10 shooting, to go with 11 rebounds and four blocks. Senior Sydney Wiese hit on five of her seven 3-point attempts to finish the game with 17 points and six assists.
Redshirt-junior Breanna Brown went for eight points, six rebounds and a career-high matching four blocks. Sophomore Taylor Kalmer and freshman Kat Tudor matched Brown with eight points apiece.
As a team, the Beavers limited Utah to 29.7 percent shooting from the floor, and committed a total of just eight fouls in the contest. Oregon State provided assists on 23 of its 29 made baskets, and outscored the Utes 21-8 in the second quarter.
The two sides went back-and-forth early on, as the teams found themselves level at 11 heading to the first media timeout. The Beavers were able to create a little bit of separation late in the quarter to end the period up 18-14.
Oregon State would extend the lead to double-digits early in the second frame, using an 8-0 run to go in front by 10. The Beavers followed that up by scoring the final 11 points of the half to go into the break up 39-22.
The Beavers wasted no time extending their advantage in the second half, taking a 22-point lead less than four minutes into the third quarter. Oregon State would score eight unanswered points in a span of less than 60 seconds to stretch the advantage to 28 late in the third. The Beavers cruised from there, taking the win by 26.
Oregon State will remain at home Sunday for a matchup with Colorado. That game will tip off at 3 p.m. and will air live on Pac-12 Networks.
