Thompson Jr., Manuel Reach Double Figures
January 19, 2017 | Men's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State guards Stephen Thompson Jr. and Kendal Manuel combined for 25 points but Stanford pulled away in the second half to post a 62-46 victory on Thursday in a Pacific-12 Conference game at Gill Coliseum.
A sophomore, Thompson Jr. hit 4 of 8 from deep and led the Beavers (4-15, 0-6) with 15 points. He has scored in double figures in all 12 games since returning to the lineup on Dec. 1 after missing six games with a foot injury.
A redshirt freshman, Manuel had two 3-point baskets and finished with 10 points, his seventh career game in double figures. He and Thompson Jr. also had three rebounds and two steals.
The Beavers came out hot and led 16-7 with 12:54 remaining in the first half following a 3-pointer by freshman guard JaQuori McLaughlin. However, they could not sustain their early momentum and Stanford (11-8, 3-4) outscored the Beavers 12-5 in the final 5:54 to take a 27-25 halftime advantage.
Much of Stanford's offense came at the foul line. It was 13 of 14 from the stripe in the first half and 23-for-32 for the game; the Beavers were 11 of 18.
OSU could not pull even in the second half. It was within 32-30 following a layup by Ronnie Stacy with 14:27 remaining, but would get no closer. Stanford slowly pulled away, was at least five points ahead for the final nine minutes, and eventually led by 17 points on two occasions.
Sophomore center Gligorije Rakocevic made his first start of the season and led the Beavers with six rebounds. Sophomore center Drew Eubanks added eight points, five rebounds and a team-leading three assists.
The Beavers resume Pac-12 action at 7:30 p.m. Saturday when they host California at Gill Coliseum. It will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
