Big tests await OSU at Rutgers, Drexel
January 19, 2017 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team headed East on Wednesday for its final long road trip of the 2016-17 season.
The Beavers (2-4) will face No. 11 Rutgers (7-2) in New Brunswick, N.J., on Friday and unranked Drexel (7-4) in Philadelphia on Saturday; both matches start at 4 p.m. PST. They then return home for four of their final six duals.
OSU won at Northern Colorado and lost at Wyoming this past weekend. Joey Palmer (133), Corey Griego (197) and Cody Crawford (hwt.) each went 2-0; Crawford had two pins and Palmer won by a tech fall and a major decision.
"Joey won twice in his first weekend at 133, that was good to see," Zalesky said of the senior, who began the year at 141Â pounds. "Cody and Corey are still getting situated in their new weight classes but those three all wrestled well.
"We had some other guys who were close. Kegan Calkins (125) competed well, he just made some mistakes. Jack Hathaway (141) and Joey Delgado (149) got beat up at the Midlands, didn't practice last week but they pulled out some matches, that was good to see.
"But we need to get better in the middle weights," as OSU was a combined 2-6 at 159, 165, 174 and 184 and gave up too many bonus points in the losses.
Rutgers defeated OSU 24-12 in Corvallis last season. The Scarlet Knights feature four wrestlers in the Jan. 17 InterMat rankings: Junior Anthony Ashnault (141, # 6); senior Ken Theobold (149, # 14); sophomore John Van Brill (157, # 18), and junior Nicholas Gravina (184, # 14).
Drexel has three ranked wrestlers: Senior Kevin Devoy (133, # 11); senior Matt Cimato (149, # 17) and junior Joey Goodhart (hwt., # 20). It is the first meeting in history between the teams.
Zalesky said the weekend will provide good competition and a different style of wrestling than OSU typically sees on the West Coast.
"They like to be on the mat, they like to ride on top," he said. "So we have to make sure we do a good job on top, and on the bottom."
The Beavers start Pac-12 action against Stanford on Jan. 30 with a 7 p.m. dual at Gill Coliseum that will be televised by the Pac-12 Network. They are five-time defending Pac-12 champions.
This year's Pac-12 Championships are Feb. 26, at Stanford. The NCAA Championships are March 16-18 at St. Louis.
