Beavers get three pins, rout Northern Colorado
January 13, 2017 | Wrestling
GREELEY, Colo. – The Oregon State wrestling team snapped a three-match losing streak on Friday night with a convincing 31-15 victory at Northern Colorado.
Back-to-back pins by junior Jack Hathaway (141) and senior Joey Delgado (149) enabled the Beavers (2-3) to pull away from UNC (0-5) for their first victory since a season-opening 22-20 triumph over Duke back on Nov. 12. Junior heavyweight Cody Crawford concluded the match with OSU's third fall.
The Beavers also got a major decision by senior Joey Palmer (133) and decisions from junior Abraham Rodriguez (157), redshirt freshman Weston Dobler (174) and sophomore Corey Griego (197) to hand the Bears their fifth consecutive loss.
The 149-pound match was pivotal. Delgado trailed 4-2 and opponent Ben Polkowske had 1:37 in riding time with less than 20 seconds remaining when Delgado got a reversal and a pin at 6:52, resulting in a decisive nine-point turnaround.
Instead of leading just 10-6, Delgado's pin gave the Beavers a comfortable 16-3 advantage. Rodriguez followed with a come-from-behind, 9-5 win at 157 to send OSU on top 19-3 at the intermission. The wins by Dobler, Â Griego and Crawford offset two pins by UNC. Â
The Beavers conclude the road trip on Sunday with a noon dual at Wyoming (1-5), which lost to South Dakota State on Friday night. OSU defeated the Cowboys 32-7 in Corvallis last season and leads the all-time series 21-8.
The Cowboys feature junior 2016 NCAA runner-up Bryce Meredith at 141 pounds; he is ranked No. 8 by InterMat. Â Other ranked Cowboys are senior Cole Mendenhall (#16, 149); junior Archie Colgan (#17, 157), and sophomore Brandon Ashworth (#15, 165).
Former Beaver Ronnie Stevens is Wyoming's starter at 133. A redshirt junior, Stevens transferred to UW this season after spending three years at OSU as a backup. His younger brother Max is a redshirt freshman for the Cowboys.
