Beavers Sweep the Falcons in Seattle
January 13, 2017 | Women's Gymnastics
SEATTLE, Wash. – No. 9 Oregon State swept the awards stand Friday night recording its second straight road win to open the 2017 season, 194.525-189.425.
Â
Despite the scoring margin it was a struggle for the Beavers counting a fall on the uneven bars in the opening rotation and again in the final stanza on the balance beam. However, Oregon State also set season-highs on the vault (49.075) and floor exercise (48.875).
Â
Senior Kaytianna McMillan earned event titles on vault (9.900), floor (9.825), bars (9.775) and in the all-around (38.700). It brings McMillan's early season win total to six through two meets.
Â
Oregon State never trailed in the meet opening a lead of nearly three points midway through the meet and the Beavers outscored the Falcons on all four events.
Â
"We learned a lot from this meet," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "We need to flip it a little faster. We struggled to warm up on bars and need to do better with that and it carried into the meet. They recovered really well on vault. This is unfortunate, a big score was out there. A few (gymnasts) really struggled through their routines but fought through. It will be great to get back home for the next two weeks. There is plenty of work to do."
Â
OSU's other event winners were Erika Aufiero, who tied for first with a 9.775 on bars, Dani Dessaints, Silvia Colussi-Pelaez and Madeline Gardiner, who all tied for first on the beam with scores of 9.875, and Gardiner, who also scored 9.825 on floor to tie for the meet-high. It is the first career event titles for Dessaints and Colussi-Pelaez.
Â
OSU approached the 49-point mark on the floor in the third rotation scoring 48.875. Gardiner and McMillan posted scores of 9.825. Isis Lowery delighted the crowd with her choreography to score 9.775 and Jacobsen and Sabrina Gill each tallied 9.725.
Â
In addition, freshman Halli Briscoe made her college debut scoring 9.550 in an exhibition on the bars.
Â
The Beavers (2-0) make their home debut next Saturday, Jan. 21, when they host Northern Illinois and Seattle Pacific at noon at Gill Coliseum. The first 300 fans through the Gill Coliseum doors will receive a free OSU Gymnastics schedule t-shirt with an image of senior Erika Aufiero.
