Beavers Fall to No. 13 Bruins on Road
January 13, 2017 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The No. 10/10 Oregon State women's basketball team fell to 4-1 in Pac-12 play Friday evening, as the Beavers fell to No. 13/17 UCLA 66-56 in Los Angeles, Calif. The loss snapped a 12-game winning streak for the Beavers.
"I thought we brought a really strong effort tonight," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "UCLA was really impressive, they made some big plays in the fourth quarter. We just didn't shoot the ball down the stretch. It's the Pac-12 on the road and it's tough. Give credit to UCLA, they played a great game."
Senior Gabriella Hanson led the Beavers with 13 points on 4-for-7 shooting from the floor, adding two rebounds and three assists. Fellow senior Kolbie Orum ended the night with 12 points and six made free throws, while junior Marie Gulich tallied a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The 6-foot-5 German finished the evening 6-for-8 from the floor.
Freshman Mikayla Pivec recorded nine points, six rebounds and five assists. Senior Sydney Wiese tallied nine rebounds in the contest.
As a team, the Beavers held UCLA to 35 percent shooting (23-for-65), and shot 38 percent (20-for-52) from the floor. Oregon State held a 39-38 edge in rebounds.
The two sides battled through a tightly-contested first quarter. UCLA jumped in front by three, before the Beavers retook the lead on back-to-back triples from Wiese and Hanson. The opening frame ultimately saw nine lead-changes, before Oregon State took a 21-20 advantage to end the period.
UCLA scored seven unanswered points early in the second quarter to go in front by six, before the Beavers charged back to get within one. The defenses would dominate the latter stages of the first half, as the Bruins took a 32-30 lead into the break. Orum led the Beavers with eight points in the first two quarters.
Oregon State wasted little time jumping in front in the second half, taking the lead on a basket from Pivec less than two minutes into the third quarter. The Beavers would score the first nine points of the second half, to extend their lead to seven. Oregon State held UCLA to just nine points in the third quarter, to enter the closing frame up by 5.
The Bruins got back within one early in the fourth quarter, and would go in front midway through the period on their way to the win.
Oregon State will remain in Southern California this week, as it takes on USC on Sunday. That game will tip off at 3 p.m. and will air live on Pac-12 Oregon and Pac-12 Los Angeles.
