Senior earns another piece of national recognition
CORVALLIS – Senior Sydney Wiese earned yet another piece of national recognition on Wednesday, as she was named to the Wooden Award Midseason Top-25.
The Wooden Award honors the top player in college basketball each season, and is selected by a panel of women's basketball experts. The list will be trimmed down to 20 players in February, with a final group of 15 players being submitted to voters before the start of the NCAA Tournament.
Wiese, who was on the Preseason Watch List for the Wooden Award, as well as the Wade Trophy, Naismith Trophy and Lieberman Award, is the Pac-12's career leader in 3-pointers made, and is a three-time All-Pac-12 selection. The senior is eighth in Oregon State history with 1,536 career points, and third in program history with 541 assists. Already this season, Wiese has earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors, and has been named Tournament MVP of both the Maui Classic and #Play4Kay Shootout.
A communication major, Wiese was named a Senior CLASS Award Candidate last week. She is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team honoree. Most recently, Wiese scored 26 points against No. 10 Stanford on Sunday, including 13 in the two overtime periods. The senior also notched the fourth triple-double in program history against UC Davis on Dec. 14.
As a team, Oregon State has won 12-straight games, and is currently ranked No. 10 in both polls. The Beavers earned their first ever road win at Stanford on Sunday, as well as their third-straight win over a ranked opponent. OSU's challenging Pac-12 slate continues on Friday, as the Beavers head to Los Angeles for a matchup with No. 13/17 UCLA.
