September 09, 2016 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team is ranked 20th in the WIN 2016-17 preseason Tournament Power Index (TPI).
The TPI is based on the school's wrestlers who are rated in WIN's individual rankings, predicting possible All-American candidates in the 2017 NCAA Championships, set for March 16-18 in St. Louis.
The Beavers return nine starters, including All-American heavyweight Amarveer Dhesi, from a 2015-16 team that won its fifth consecutive Pacific-12 Conference tournament championship after going 11-6 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-12.
Dhesi is ranked No. 4 at heavyweight. He was 32-5 in 2016, took fifth at the NCAA championships, and was named the Pac-12 Wrestler of the Year after capturing the conference title in his weight class.
Other Beavers in the preseason rankings are junior 125-pounder Ronnie Bresser (9); senior 133-pounder Joey Palmer (10) and sophomore 184-pounder Corey Griego (16). Each advanced to the NCAAs after taking second at the Pac-12 championships.
Oklahoma State, the all-time leader with 34 NCAA team championships, is ranked No. 1. Rounding out the Top 10 are Virginia Tech, Iowa, Ohio State, Missouri, Michigan, Penn State, Cornell, Nebraska and Illinois.
Stanford (11) is the highest-ranked Pac-12 team. Others in the top 51 are Arizona State (29) and CSU-Bakersfield (51).
OSU's 2016-17 schedule will be released shortly, after the Pac-12 finalizes the winter television schedule.
