Bolden sparks Beavers to 37-7 win over Bengals
September 17, 2016 | Football
Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State football team routed Idaho State 37-7 on Saturday in its home opener before a crowd of 38,054 at Reser Stadium.
Junior wide receiver Victor Bolden Jr. scored on a 92-yard jet sweep, rushed for 111 yards overall and added 56 receiving yards and 15 kick return yards to pace the offense and the defense had five takeaways as Beavers (1-1) christened the stadium's new The Terrace hospitality area with a lopsided victory.
"It's great to get a win and we need to enjoy it the right way, and start to prepare [Sunday] for a big challenge out there" next Saturday against Boise State, OSU coach Gary Andersen said. "The turnovers on defense were a big positive," and could have pitched a shutout except for a breakdown on a 75-yard scoring run on Idaho State's first play of the second half.
"The rest of the runs we did a pretty nice job, They threw the ball and we just gave up seven points. We could-have, should-have had a shutout, and that would have been nice but it didn't happen.".Â
Junior quarterback Darell Garretson completed 15 of 30 passes for 172 yards to eight receivers, and rushed for 46 yards and a touchdown as OSU rolled up 418 yards in total offense. OSU rushed for 246 yards and averaged 5.9 yard per play.
Junior placekicker Garrett Owens added field goals of 43, 40 and 31 yards and was perfect on four extra points. His field goals all came in the first half, when the Beavers built a 23-0 lead.
The Bengals (1-2) scored on their first play of the second half to draw within 23-7. However, OSU responded with 14 unanswered points on Bolden's TD run and a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown by cornerback Treston Decoud to settle the issue once and for all.
Sophomore cornerback Dwayne Williams and junior linebacker Manase Hungalu had six tackles apiece to spark the defense. OSU had four sacks, two by Titus Failauga, and seven tackles for loss to complement the five takeaways.
The Beavers improved to 27-3 in nonconference home games in this century and to 2-0 all-time against Idaho State, members of the FCS Big Sky Conference. They prevailed 61-10 on Sept. 22, 2007, in the only previous game between the programs.
OSU concludes its nonconference schedule against Boise State of the Mountain West Conference at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at Reser Stadium. The game will be televised by FS1.
