Rushing Game Shines in Scrimmage
April 09, 2016 | Football
HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Oregon State football team held its first scrimmage of the spring practice session Saturday afternoon in front of 3,750 fans at Hillsboro Stadium as part of the Dam City Showcase, which also featured an OSU baseball game.
The 69-play scrimmage brought the Beavers to the Portland area for their first football appearance since the Spring Game in 2005 at then PGE Park.
The Beavers' rushing game started slowly but picked up late in the scrimmage rushing 36 times for 169 yards and two touchdowns. Burly senior tailback Tim Cook provided the first score of the day rumbling in from nine yards out. Incumbent running back Ryan Nall finished the scrimmage with 59 yards on 14 carries and scored on a two-yard dive to end the scrimmage.
Veteran quarterbacks Darell Garretson and Marcus McMaryion split snaps with the first team offense and recently-arrived freshman Mason Moran played with the second team.
During red zone drills in the second half of the scrimmage, McMaryion hit redshirt-freshman Tuli Wily-Matagi in the back of the endzone for a two-yard touchdown. Mason came back on the next drive finding fellow freshman Trevon Bradford for a 12-yard touchdown strike.
The defense also had moments of brilliance with Sumner Houston recovering a fumble inside its own five yardline early on and Dwayne Williams wrestled away a ball from a receiver to record the only interception of the day.
OSU's Spring Game is slated for next Saturday, April 16, at 1 p.m. at Reser Stadium. Admission is free. The game will air live on the Pac-12 Networks and part of the Beaver Sports Radio Network.
