LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Senior Joey Delgado and sophomore Corey Griego both took fifth place on Saturday to lead the Oregon State wrestling team to a 16th-place finish at the Cliff Keen Invitational at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
The Beavers moved up nine places from Friday's opening round and tied with Eastern Michigan with 34 points. They improved eight spots from their 2015 Cliff Keen finish.
Griego was 6-2 overall and capped an impressive run through the consolation bracket after losing his opening-round match by pinning Ricky Robertson of Wisconsin in 1:03 in their fifth-place match. He went 3-1 on Saturday and avenged that opening-round defeat with an 8-5 decision over Tom Sleigh of Bucknell in the third-place quarterfinals.
Delgado won his fifth-place match by medical forfeit over Solomon Chishko of Virginia Tech. He was 3-1 on Saturday and went 5-2 overall.
Junior heavyweight Cody Crawford lost 5-1 to Gage Hutchinson of Eastern Michigan on Saturday in his first consolation match and was eliminated with a 2-2 mark.
On Friday, senior Joey Palmer (141) and redshirt freshman Weston Dobler (174) each advanced to the consolation round of 16 before being eliminated with 2-2 records.
Also, Kegan Calkins (125), Abraham Rodriguez (157), Rodney Williams (165) and Bob Coleman (184) each went 0-2 and were eliminated. Freshman 134-pounder Devan Turner did not compete.
The Beavers resume action on Dec. 15, at Utah Valley University. The Reno Tournament of Champions (Dec. 18) and the Midlands (Dec. 29-30) conclude competition for the calendar year.
They begin Pacific-12 Conference action against Stanford on Jan. 30, 2017, also at Gill Coliseum. They are five-time defending Pac-12 champions.
This year's Pac-12 Championships are Feb. 26, at Stanford. The NCAA Championships are March 16-18 at St. Louis.
