Delgado advances to Midlands semifinals

EVANSTON, Ill. – Junior Joey Delgado won three matches and advanced to the semifinals of the 149-pound weight class on Thursday on Day 1 of the 54th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at Northwestern University.
The tournament's No. 6 seed at 149, Delgado will face second-seeded Justin Oliver of Central Michigan in the semifinal round, which starts at 10 a.m. PST on Friday. The championship and third-place matches begin at 5 p.m. and will be televised by the Big Ten Network.
Junior 141-pounder Jack Hathaway won his first two matches to advance to the quarterfinals before losing and dropping into the consolation bracket. He faces Nick Zaretta of Pittsburgh in the consolation round of 16 on Friday.
Junior heavyweight Cody Crawford also advanced to the quarterfinals before losing. He then won two consolation matches to move to the consolation round of 16, where he faces Michael Boykin of North Carolina State.
OSU is in 18th place with 26 points. Iowa leads the event with 86.5 points; Nebraska is second at 78.5 points.
Abraham Rodriguez (157) went 3-2; Kegan Calkins (125) and David Henry (hwt.) went 1-2 and were eliminated.Bryce Parson (157), Rodney Williams (165), Weston Dobler (174) and Bob Coleman (184) lost two consecutive matches and were also eliminated.
The tournament concludes on Friday. OSU is then idle until a Jan. 13, 2017, dual at Northern Colorado.
