Beavers head east for Midlands Championships

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team will compete at the 54th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships at Northwestern University on Thursday and Friday.
The Midlands is one of the top events of the winter. OSU placed 12th at the 2015 event with 50 points; then-sophomore Ronnie Bresser placed second and then-redshirt freshman Kegan Calkins placed sixth at 125 pounds.
Coach Jim Zalesky said this week several lineup changes may be forthcoming. Senior Joey Palmer (14-4) is expected to drop from 141 to 133, his weight class for the past two seasons. Junior Jack Hathaway (9-3), a 2015 (133) and 2016 (141) starter and 2015 NCAA qualifier, will take Palmer's place.
Bresser is not competing in this year's Midlands, as he is redshirting. Freshman 133-pounder Devan Turner (2-2) won't compete either; he's battled injuries all season and may be held out for the balance of the year.
The Beavers were not ranked in the Top 25 in the most recent USA Today/National Wrestling Coaches Association's poll, which was released on Dec. 20.
Oklahoma State was ranked No. 1 by USA Today/NWCA, followed by Penn State, Iowa, Ohio State and Missouri. Future OSU opponents in the rankings were Rutgers (11), Stanford (16), Oklahoma (18), Arizona State (19) and Drexel (25). Future opponent Wyoming also received votes.
Three Beavers earned Top-20 consideration in their respective weight classes by Amateur Wrestling News. Two were ranked by The Open Mat and two by InterMat in those website's weekly evaluations.
Beavers in the individual rankings were:
OSU begins Pacific-12 Conference action against Stanford on Jan. 30, 2017, at Gill Coliseum. The Beavers are five-time defending Pac-12 champions.
This year's Pac-12 Championships are Feb. 26, at Stanford. The NCAA Championships are March 16-18 at St. Louis.
