Beavers Win #Play4Kay Shootout
December 21, 2016 | Women's Basketball
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The No. 15/25 Oregon State women's basketball team took the #Play4Kay Shootout title Wednesday evening, as it handed Oklahoma State its first loss of the season in the tournament's championship game, held in Las Vegas, Nev.
"Our team built some great momentum here," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "Oklahoma State is a team that's used to winning, and expects to win. We knew this was a great opportunity for us, and I loved that we were able to take advantage of it. I couldn't be happier with where this group is right now. This is a young group that played like a veteran team today, and that's a great sign for us."
Senior Sydney Wiese once again led the way for the Beavers, finishing with 15 points, four rebounds and five assists, while going 6-for-12 from the floor. Freshman Mikayla Pivec topped Oregon State in scoring, going for 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting and adding five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Wiese earned Player of the Tournament honors, and Pivec was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Redshirt-junior Breanna Brown had another efficient outing, hitting six of her eight shots to end the evening with 12 points, five rebounds and a block. Junior Marie Gulich also filled up the stat-sheet from the post position, tallying nine points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
As a team, the Beavers hit 53.3 percent (32-for-60) of their shots on the evening, and held a 42-22 edge in rebounds.
The teams went back and forth in the early going, as the Beavers took a 10-8 lead into the first quarter media timeout. Oklahoma State would end the period with a two-point edge. The two sides continued to trade the advantage through much of the second quarter, before Oregon State surged out to a seven points lead. The Cowgirls would convert a basket at the halftime buzzer to send the Beavers to the locker room with a 37-32 lead.
Wiese and Pivec both finished the first half in double-figures, as the Beavers shot 50 percent from the floor through the first two quarters.
The Beavers came out strong in the second half, using a 9-0 run to jump in front by 12 early in the third quarter. Oregon State would maintain the advantage from there, taking a 50-42 lead into the closing period. The Beavers scored nine unanswered points in the fourth quarter to go ahead by 16, and never looked back, taking the win by 19.
The Beavers will return home to take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Dec. 27 in their final nonconference game of the season. Oregon State will open Pac-12 play on Dec. 30, when it faces Washington State.
