LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The No. 15/25 Oregon State women's basketball team earned a hard-fought 62-59 win over UNLV Monday evening, in the first round of the #Play4Kay Shootout in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Beavers trailed by as many as nine in the fourth quarter, but a late rally lifted Oregon State to victory, as it handed the Lady Rebels their second loss of the season.
"I'm really proud of this win," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "UNLV has proven themselves as a really good team. I knew this was going to be a tough game, and I was impressed by the way we were able to close it out. We hit some big shots down the stretch. In a tournament like this, you just want to be able to advance, and we made the plays to do that."
Senior Sydney Wiese score 25 points on 8-for-11 shooting in the win. The communications major hit four 3-pointers in the contest, as she moved into sole possession of second-place on the Pac-12 career 3-pointers list with 293. The teams found themselves in a tight battle early on, as the Beavers held a one-point advantage midway through the first quarter. UNLV would respond by jumping out to a 13-6 lead, but the Beavers would bounce back to even the score at 15 headed into the second quarter.
Oregon State used an 11-0 run in the beginning stages of the second frame to take a nine-point lead. The two sides would go back and forth from there, as the Beavers took a 35-27 edge into the intermission. Wiese did not miss a shot in the first half, going 4-for-4 from the field and 4-for-4 from the line to enter the break with 13 points.
The Lady Rebels came out of the half fast, cutting the lead to two early in the third quarter.
