PORTLAND, Ore. – Freshman guard JaQuori McLaughlin scored a career-high 23 points on Sunday to lead Oregon State in a 53-45 loss to Portland in the finale of the Dam City Classic.

McLaughlin's previous best was 16 points, in Friday's night's game with Long Beach State in OSU's Classic opener. He hit four 3-pointers, made eight shots from beyond the arc and scored 39 points in the two games at the Moda Center.

Sophomore guard Stephen Thompson Jr. added 12 points, giving him 29 for the weekend. However, the rest of the team combined for only 10 points in OSU's first game under 50 points since a 75-48 loss at Stanford on Feb. 26, 2015.

McLaughlin has scored in double figures in nine of OSU's (3-9) 12 games. He is averaging 11.9 points, has 11 trifectas in the last three games and leads the team with 26 overall.

Redshirt freshman guard Kendal Manuel had a team-high three assists and was one of four players with four rebounds. OSU had a season-low of seven turnovers but shot just 28 percent (14-50) from the floor, by far its lowest percentage of the season.

The game was tied 22-22 at halftime but Portland capitalized on OSU's shooting woes to zip ahead 31-24 with 16:20 remaining. OSU was within 32-29 with 11:27 to play but the Pilots responded with nine unanswered points for a 41-32 advantage with 7:06 to go.

The Beavers came no closer than six points the rest of the way and lost for the fifth time in a row. Sunday was a season-low in points; their previous low was 57 at Mississippi State on Dec. 1.

The Beavers host Kent State of the Mid-American Conference on Wednesday in their next game. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. and the game will be televised by ESPNU.
