Beavers Defeat No. 23 Washington State In Pullman
November 04, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
Oregon State won its eighth in its last 13 against Washington State
PULLMAN, Wash. – In four of the last five seasons leading up to 2016, the Oregon State volleyball team had posted at least one victory over a top-25 ranked team.
Â
You can now amend that to five of the last six.
Â
The Beavers downed No. 23 Washington State in four sets Friday night at Bohler Gym. Set scores were 19-25, 27-25, 25-23 and 25-19.
Â
The win sent Oregon State (10-14, 3-10 Pac-12 Conference) to its second consecutive victory after defeating Arizona in four sets Sunday at Gill Coliseum. Additionally, the Beavers won their eighth match in their last 13 against Washington State (17-8, 7-6), giving the club a season split against the Cougars.
Â
On Friday, the Beavers, seemingly, beat Washington State at its own game. The Cougars came into the match ranked tied for first in the Pac-12 with 3.38 blocks per set. While WSU did finish with 14 blocks, Oregon State finished with a season-best 17.5. Serena Bruin set a career-best with a team-high nine, while Katelyn Driscoll and Kory Cheshire each had seven.
Â
For Driscoll, it set a career-high, surpassing six against Cal State Bakersfield in 2014. For Cheshire, meanwhile, the seven tied her career best set against California last season.
Â
Offensively, it was Mary-Kate Marshall who ended the match with the final kill – her team-leading 18th of the night. She added seven digs and four blocks, while Lila Toner was right behind the junior with 10 kills of her own.
Â
Cheshire added nine kills and Driscoll and Lanesha Reagan pitched in with five apiece.
Â
Kayla Ellis tallied 14 digs to pace the Beavers.
Â
The Beavers hit .221 on the night, barely out-hitting Washington State's .220 mark. Oregon State was held to a .000 clip in the first set, but improved as the match went on. The Beavers finished with a .231 mark in set two, a .300 percentage in set three and a .357 clip in set four. The Cougars, meanwhile, varied, hitting .118 in set four to finish the match.
Â
The Beavers turned the tables late in what turned out to be a momentum-changing fourth set. Down 22-19 late, Oregon State scored eight of the set's last 11 points. The Cougars had set point twice – at 24-22 and 24-23 – but a kill by Marshall and combo block by Bruin and Toner tied the score at 24.
Â
The Cougars went up 25-24, but OSU tied the score when Bruin and Marshall combined for yet another block. Toner helped put the Cougars away with a kill, and then fittingly, a block with Bruin.
Â
Oregon State returns to action Sunday when visiting Washington in Seattle. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT – live stats and live video links available on osubeavers.com.
