Beavers Edged By Marquette 74-73
November 22, 2016 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS – The No. 15/22 Oregon State women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday evening, narrowly falling to Marquette 74-73 at Gill Coliseum.
"First off, we have to give credit to Marquette, because they played a really good game," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "They're a really difficult team to defend, and they made plays down the stretch. I'm proud of our team. This was our first true test as a group, and I loved the way we responded. This is a new team creating its identity, and I think we went a long way towards doing that tonight. This was a great game tonight, and we will get better from this experience."
Oregon State (3-1) led for the majority of the fourth quarter, and had a chance to take the victory on the final possession, but was unable to convert as time expired. With the win, Marquette (4-0) remains undefeated on the season, and notches its second-straight win over a Pac-12 opponent (Arizona State on Saturday).
Senior guard Sydney Wiese recorded a double-double, scoring 15 points and dishing out 11 assists, one short of her career-high. Wiese also hit three 3-pointers, to move within 16 of the Pac-12 record for longballs.
Junior Marie Gulich scored a career-high 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting. The 6-foot-5 German has now scored in double-figures in all four games this season. Redshirt-junior Breanna Brown went 5-for-9 to finish with 10 points, five rebounds and three blocks.
As a team, Oregon State shot 44.3 percent from the floor (27-for-61) and provided assists on 23 of their 27 made field goals.
The teams traded punches early on, as Wiese hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first five minutes to put the Beavers up 10-7. Marquette went ahead 14-10 later in the period, but Hanson knocked down a 3-pointer at the buzzer to level the sides at 19 to end the first quarter.
Â
The Golden Eagles would take a 32-23 lead mid-way through the second period, before the Beavers surged back to cut the edge to one on a layup from Wiese that brought the crowd to its feet. Marquette would extend the advantage to four, but Wiese nailed a jumper at the halftime horn to send the teams to the locker-room with the visitors up 41-39.
Â
The Beavers jumped in front 45-43 early in the second half, taking their first lead since the opening quarter. The two sides would go back and forth from there, entering the final frame with Marquette up 55-54.
Â
Oregon State wasted no time retaking the lead in the closing period, as Gulich converted inside just nine seconds into the frame. The Beavers would extend the advantage from there, using outstanding post play from Gulich and Brown to build a 65-59 lead. Oregon State would hold the advantage until Marquette went ahead 72-71 with less than two minutes to play.
Â
The Beavers retook the lead with under 30 seconds left, but Marquette hit a pair of free throws with 13 ticks remaining and hung on for the victory.
Â
Neither team led by double-digits in the contest, and each quarter was decided by two points or fewer.
Â
Oregon State will now have over a week off, before it hits the road for the first time this season. The Beavers head to Maui next Friday and Saturday to take on Idaho and BYU, respectively. OSU will return home on Dec. 10 for a matchup with Southern Utah. Tickets for all Oregon State games can be purchased at BeaverTickets.com.
