Palmer, Crawford win matches at Joe Wells Classic
November 20, 2016 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team fell to No. 11 Michigan 38-7 at Gill Coliseum on Sunday in the second annual Joe Wells Classic, its home opener.
The 24th-ranked Beavers (1-2) earned a major decision from heavyweight Cody Crawford and a decision from 141-pounder Joey Palmer against the undefeated (3-0) Wolverines, who also won at Oklahoma on Friday night to conclude a cross-country road trip with a 2-0 mark.
"There were a couple weights we didn't hold up, we just didn't set the pace in a lot of matches," OSU coach Jim Zalesky said. "They were shooting on us and we were not on offense enough.
"When you go out, you have to be ready to compete and in a lot of weights we didn't. A lot of our guys need more mat time but they also have to figure out, 'Are you going to compete, or are you going to take a back seat?'
"We had too many guys taking back seats out there today."
An NCAA qualifier at 133 pounds in 2015-16, Palmer has moved up a class for his senior season. He decisioned Sal Profaci 4-1 to improve to 3-0.
"It feels a lot better, it feels as if I can move a lot more" at his new weight, Palmer said. "Today my goal was to wrestle, and not think about my opponent. Put points on the board, and just have fun.
"Right now we have a lot of younger guys who need to develop more confidence, that's what I see," he added. "They are tough and they battle in the room."
Crawford dominated Dan Perry from start to finish and posted a 15-3 major decision in his first match of the year. He wrestled at 197 his first two seasons but moved up to replace All-American Amarveer Dhesi, who is sidelined for the season with a knee injury.
"It's all about the end of the year," said Crawford, a Pacific-12 Conference champion and NCAA qualifier in 2014-15 as a redshirt freshman. "We started off today with not our best performance, and we have a lot of room to get better.
"The coaches will analyze where we are and we will come back next week, and every other week, better than we were before."
The Beavers are idle until the Dec. 2-3 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Their next dual is Dec. 15, at Utah Valley University.
