McMaryion throws for five TDs in 42-17 victory
November 19, 2016 | Football
McMaryion, who entered the game with four TD passes in 131 attempts, needed only 19 passes to more than double his season total. He was 16-of-19 overall for 265 yards and connected with Jordan Villamin, Ryan Nall, Timmy Hernandez, Trevon Bradford and Artavis Pierce on his scoring strikes.
Villamin set season-highs with six receptions for 124 yards and OSU (3-8, 2-6 Pac-12) pounded out 475 yards of total offense in avenging a 44-7 loss to the Wildcats (2-9, 0-8) in Tucson last season. McMaryion completed passes to five receivers in his most efficient performance of his career.
"I am really, really proud," OSU coach Gary Andersen said. "We stuck with the plan, and Marcus was masterful. He threw the ball and guys made plays. When you can throw it, run it and catch it, offense becomes a lot cleaner.
"Marcus threw it accurately and his guys caught the ball for him. It's awesome to see him have that success. He battles, he's a team-first guy and he should be very proud of himself, because we are."
McMaryion threw a 53-yard TD pass to Villamin and an 11-yard strike to Nall in the first quarter as OSU jumped to a quick 14-0 lead. He hit Hernandez on a 27-yard strike in the second quarter and OSU led 21-10 at halftime.
A 35-yard TD pass to Bradford and Nall's 3-yard scoring run made it 35-10 heading into the fourth quarter. McMaryion's 10-yar TD toss to Pierce with 1:30 remaining finished the scoring and gave the Beavers their most-lopsided Pac-12 win since a 32-point (49-17) decision at California in Oct. 19, 2013.
The Beavers threw for 265 yards, rushed for 210 and had just one sack.
"The offensive line was very solid," aided by the return of freshman guard Gus Lavaka from injury, Andersen said. "When those five guys are going well and with Ryan and AP [Pierce] back there that's a pretty solid punch, with two physical backs.
"Jordan took advantage of opportunities that came his way. When he continues to play like that he's a tremendous player. That's what we expect from him, week-in and week-out.
"Defensively we contained the crazy big plays on the run," and had one takeaway, cornerback Xavier Crawford's first career interception, which stopped a budding Arizona scoring drive late in the third quarter.
"This team has fought every week," without making excuses despite a plethora of injuries, Andersen said. "I sound like a broken record, but they continue to work every single week."
OSU concludes the season at 1 p.m. Nov. 26 with the 120th edition of the Civil War, is presented PacificSource Health Plans, Spirit Mountain Casino, Safeway/Albertsons, and Your Local Toyota Dealers. It will be televised by Pac-12 Networks.
