Beavers Sink Pilots on Banner Night
November 18, 2016 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS – The No. 18/24 Oregon State women's basketball team held Portland to 27.8 percent shooting from the floor, as it cruised to a 62-45 win over the Pilots Friday evening at Gill Coliseum.
The Beavers honored the 2015-16 squad in a special pregame ceremony, as the team unveiled its Pac-12 Championship, NCAA Tournament, Sweet 16, Elite Eight and Final Four banners.
"This was a really special night," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "I thought the turnout from our fan base was phenomenal, and it was great to celebrate last season with Beaver Nation one more time. On the floor, we started the game with great defensive energy. I liked Portland's grit, they got stronger as the game went along. Overall, this was a really good night for us."
With the win, the Beavers have now won 15-straight home games, dating back to December of 2015.
Junior Marie Gulich went 5-for-9 from the floor and hit all four of her free-throw attempts to lead Oregon State with 14 points. The 6-foot-5 German also tallied seven rebounds, one block and one steal. Senior Gabriella Hanson finished with 11 points, three rebounds and three steals.
Freshman Kat Tudor continued her hot shooting from behind the arc, knocking down three 3-pointers to end the night with nine points and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Katie McWilliams scored six points and led all players with five assists, while redshirt-junior Breanna Brown notched four blocks in 16 minutes of playing time.
Oregon State jumped out to an early lead, scoring the first 13 points of the game, and holding Portland scoreless for the first 7:46 of game time. The Beaver defense locked down the Pilots in the opening frame, as Portland converted just one field goal in the first 10 minutes of play.

The Beavers continued their stellar defensive play in the second quarter, holding the Pilots to just eight points. Overall, Oregon State shot 42.9 percent (12-for-28) in the first half, compared to 12 percent (3-for-25) for Portland. The Beavers carried a 33-12 advantage into the intermission.
Â
The second half would feature more of the same, as the Beavers continued to control the contest on both ends of the floor. Oregon State held a 51-28 edge headed to the final frame, on its way to the 17-point win.
