Oregon State Signs Four For 2017
November 15, 2016 | Women's Volleyball
The four will join the program for the 2017 season
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team is excited to welcome four additions to the roster for the 2017 season, head coach Mark Barnard announced on Tuesday.
Â
Joining the program are outside hitter Maddie Goings (Fort Worth, Texas), libero/defensive specialist Grace Massey (Beaverton, Ore.), setter Kylee McLaughlin (Carollton, Texas) and middle blocker Lindsay Schell (Temecula, Calif.).
Â
"This could be an impact 2017 class," Barnard said. "It is likely that two or three may vie for starting positions immediately. The 2017 Class represents a nice coverage for all positions and with all players coming from strong junior programs I feel that they will impact positively the strength of the personnel on the roster."
Â
Goings will join the Oregon State program with heralded honors. In 2016, she was a Prep Volleyball All-American and an AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Honorable Mention All-American. Additionally, Goings is ranked 74th on the Top 100 Senior Aces Prep Volleyball.
Â
A 5-foot-11 outside hitter from Aledo High School, she was named the 8-5A Offensive Player of the Year in both 2014 and 2015, and the Outstanding Hitter of the Year at 7-4A in 2013. She's also been quite successful in the classroom, being named a TGCA (Texas Girls Coaches Association) Academic All-State selection in both 2015 and 2016.
Â
"Maddie plays with Kylee McLaughlin on the same National Champion TAV team," Barnard said. "Maddie is an undersized outside hitter who possesses great ball control and a variety of shot making skills. She is a six-rotation player who will be able to fill a multitude of roles due to her volleyball ability."
Â
Massey comes to Oregon State from Beaverton's Jesuit High School, where she helped the program win the 6A State Championship as a sophomore and as a junior. She was named first-team all-league as a sophomore, junior and senior and first-team all-state in 2015. She has 962 career digs and 154 service aces.
Â
A 5-foot-5 defensive specialist and libero, Massey is the sister of former Oregon State defensive specialist Martie Massey, who graduated in 2013. In addition to her accolades on the court, Grace has been successful in the classroom, earning High Honor Roll honors each of her four years. She has also volunteered at the Rose Haven Elderly Home, participated in an immersion trip called the Portland Plunge and participates in an "Adopt-A-Family" drive during the holidays.
Â
"Following from the lead of her sister, Martie, Grace is a highly skilled Libero/defensive specialist," Barnard said. "She is a very-refined passer and has a very gritty defensive attitude. The fans will love watching her play as she covers large amounts of the court playing her usual tenacious defense."
Â
McLaughlin will join the Oregon State program from Carrollton's Hebron High School, where she helped her team to a 2015 state championship at the 6A level. She was named to the All-State Team as well. The 5-foot-11 setter is considered one of the top setters in the competitive Dallas/Fort Worth Region, earning TGCA All-Star Team honors.
Â
During her career at Hebron, McLaughlin has been a Gatorade Player of the Year nominee, and was first-team all-district in 2013, 2014 and 2015. She's also been successful in the classroom, being named All-Academic her first three seasons at Hebron.
Â
"A starting setter for the National Champion TAV (club) team, Kylee is going to be one of the players who may be able to make an immediate impact on the team," Barnard said. "She is a tenacious competitor and is used to winning. She runs a very effective offense with her club team and will be well suited to the rigors of running a Pac 12 offense."
Â
Schell, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker from Temecula Valley High School in California, will join the program after being named a Second-Team All-Southwestern League selection in 2015. Most recently, in 2016, she's helped guide her club to a perfect 10-0 record in league play, earning the conference championship, its first since 2000. Schell holds the Temecula Valley school single-season record with 76 solo blocks in 2015.
Â
She is ranked 49th on the Top 100 Senior Aces Prep Volleyball. Like Goings and McLaughlin, Schell has been successful in the classroom, being on California Scholarship Federation (CSF) from 2014-16. The CSF recognizes students living in the state of California who possess high standards in academics.
Â
"Lindsey is going to bolster our offense and defense in the middle of the court," Barnard said. "At 6-foot-2, she will add much needed size to our middle blocker roster and coming out of the ultra-competitive Southern California region, she will be used to the demands of playing at the highest level. She's an effective attacker both in front and behind the setter, along with an imposing block, that will equip her well in her freshman season in the Pac-12."
