Three Oregon State Players Score in Double-Figures
CORVALLIS – The No. 17/24 Oregon State women's basketball team moved to 2-0 on the season Monday evening, as the Beavers earned a 61-38 win over Idaho State at Gill Coliseum.
"I was proud of our effort tonight," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "We knew going in to this game that Idaho State would be very disciplined and well-coached. I thought they were really effective defensively in the first half, and it took a while for us to learn how to deal with a team that defends the way they do. I really liked the way we played on the defensive end; we controlled the game tempo-wise. As this group continues to grow as a team, we need to see all different types of opponents. I think our team took a big step forward today, and they responded to adversity really well."
Senior guard Sydney Wiese scored 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the floor, and set a career-high with six steals. Freshman Kat Tudor exploded from beyond the arc, hitting four of her five 3-point attempts to finish the game with 12 points.
Junior Marie Gulich hit on four of her five shot attempts to end the evening with 11 points, as she finished in double-digits for the second-straight game. She also set a career-high with five blocks. Freshman Mikayla Pivec filled up the stat-sheet, pulling down a team-best seven rebounds, to go along with six points and two assists.
As a team, Oregon State held Idaho State to 27.1 percent shooting from the floor, and outscored the Bengals 25-14 in the second half. The Beavers shot 43.4 percent (23-for-53) from the floor, and provided assists on 18 of their 23 made baskets.
The teams traded buckets early on, as the Bengals took a 16-11 lead to end the first quarter. The Beavers surged back in the second frame to tie the score at 18, before Gulich hit a fade-away to give Oregon State the lead with three minutes left in the first half. The Beavers took a 26-24 lead into the intermission.
Oregon State scored the first five points of the second half to extend the advantage to seven. The Beavers would go ahead by double-figures at the third-quarter media timeout. OSU ultimately outscored ISU 17-7 in the third quarter, to head into the final period with a 43-31 advantage.
The Beavers continued to extend the lead from there, as Tudor scored six fourth-quarter points to lift the Beavers to a 23-point victory.
Oregon State will return to Gill Coliseum on Friday for a matchup with the University of Portland. That game is slated to tip-off at 6 p.m. Tickets for all Oregon State home games can be purchased online at BeaverTickets.com.
