CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men's basketball team completed an undefeated opening weekend on Sunday with a come-from-behind, 72-64 victory over Texas-San Antonio before a crowd of 4,070 at Gill Coliseum.
Sophomore forward Tres Tinkle established career-highs in points (26) and assists (4) and added 12 rebounds in a sterling all-around performance. It was his second double-double of the weekend; he had 20 points and 15 rebounds in a 78-58 win over Prairie View A&M in Friday night's season-opener.
Tinkle twice had scored 23 points, the last time at Oregon on Feb. 20, 2016. He was 7-of-18 from the field and 11-of-16 from the foul line, and also had two blocked shots and two steals.
Sophomore center Drew Eubanks added 13 points and five rebounds and freshman guard JaQuori McLaughlin added 13 points, including a key driving layup as the shot clock was expiring to give OSU a 69-63 lead with 59 seconds to play.
Junior forward Matt Dahlen grabbed the rebound of a missed 3-point shot and then made a free throw with 27 seconds remaining for a 70-63 edge. UTSA drew within 70-64 on a free throw but McLaughlin hit two more from the line with 18 seconds to play for the final margin.
Eubanks (14) and McLaughlin (12) also scored in double figures against Prairie View A&M.
Sophomore guard Stephen Thompson Jr. missed the game with a minor foot injury.
The Beavers (2-0) trailed 37-29 at halftime but opened the second half on a 9-2 run to take their first lead since midway through the first half at 40-39 on a 3-pointer by Tinkle. UTSA went back ahead briefly, 42-41, but a 3-point play by Eubanks with 16:02 left sent OSU ahead 43-41 and it never trailed again.
Ties ensued at 45-45 and 47-47before a tip-in by junior forward Keondre Dew put the Beavers up for good, 49-47, with 14:15 to play. They eventually led by 11 (61-50) with 7:50 to play before UTSA made one final charge at the lead.
The Roadrunners (0-2) drew within 63-62 with 3:30 left but McLaughlin buried his only 3-pointer of the day for a 66-62 advantage with 3:09 remaining. USTA never got closer than three points thereafter.
The Beavers outrebounded the Roadrunners 42-39 and outscored them 28-24 in the paint.
