Beavers Announce 2017 Recruiting Class
November 10, 2016 | Men's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State men's basketball head coach Wayne Tinkle and his staff announced Thursday the addition of two student-athletes who signed National Letters of Intent.
Â
The 2017 class includes Zach Reichle, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound guard from Wilsonville, Ore., and Ethan Thompson, a 6-foot-5, 180-pound guard from Los Angeles, Calif.
Â
"We are very excited to announce our 2017 signees," Tinkle said. "Both young men come from incredible high school programs and sensational families. They both do an unbelievable job in school. We are excited to not only be adding very talented basketball players, but great young men who get it done in the classroom, in the community and on the court. We are thrilled to add Zach and Ethan to our program."
Â
Zach Reichle (pronounced Rike-uhl)
Reichle attends Wilsonville High School and is rated the No. 1 player in Oregon for the upcoming season and a three-star recruit by ESPN. Last season he was a unanimous selection for State Player of the Year in Class 5A and won first team all-state honors when he led Wilsonville to the Oregon Class 5A state championship. He holds more than 50 school records and has started every game since his freshman year.
Â
He carries a 3.89 cumulative GPA at Wilsonville High School.
Â
ESPN.com describes Reichle as:
Â
"A rangy wing-type with a smooth shooting stroke. In transition he is an excellent look-ahead passer and his vision overall is high-level. His ball skills allow him to lead the break and his decision making is quite good. He delivers passes on target right in the shooter's pocket and his skip passes are advanced as well. Despite his passing prowess, the ultimate strength of his game is his shooting. He can nail 3-point shots from all over the stripe, especially off the catch. Despite not getting much elevation on his shot, his release is smooth and effortless."
Â
Wayne Tinkle on Zach Reichle:
Â
"We are thrilled to be adding another in-state product. He's one of the best wings in the Northwest who can shoot it with range. He's very, very competitive and tough nosed. He has really improved his overall game and ability to get to the rim, get fouled and finish. He's another talented prospect and we expect him to contribute right away. We wanted to make Oregon the center of our recruiting and adding one of the top players in our area is a real credit to the program and the direction we are heading."
Â
Reichle chose Oregon State because: "I felt like I could reach my full potential as a person here, get a great education and it was the place I felt most comfortable."
Â
Ethan Thompson
Thompson attends Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, Calif., where he is a consensus four-star recruit and ranked No. 51 in the ESPN 100, No. 49 by Rivals.com and No. 53 by Scout.com, making him the highest-rated player in program history. He was All State, first team All-CIF Open Division and helped lead his team to the semifinals of the Peach Jam at the Nike EYBL. He was invited to the Nike Skills Academy, the NBA Top 100 Camp and the Pangos All-American Camp. Thompson also participated with the Puerto Rican National Team in the FIBA Americas U18.
Â
He carries a 4.17 cumulative GPA at Bishop Montgomery High School.
Â
ESPN.com says Thompson:
Â
"Has an ideal frame with long arms and good athleticism. He has an advanced skill set for a player of his youth. He handles the ball well in transition and he's an astute passer. He has evolving mid-range skills and he can score at all three levels. His 3-point shot is solid and his release looks tight."
Â
Wayne Tinkle on Ethan Thompson:
Â
"He's a multi-purpose guard who can play the point or off the ball. Probably any number of positions. He's a highly-skilled, very-competitive, tough-nosed perimeter player who will add a lot of talent to our group. He's a very capable defender, loves to mix it up and loves to guard the other team's best player. He also rebounds it very well for a guard. He brings toughness and we are looking forward to having him in a Beaver uniform. I know he'll do great things for us."
Â
Thompson chose Oregon State because: "I chose to attend OSU because I was impressed with the basketball facility, the coaching staff and the character of my future teammates. The opportunity to contribute as a freshman was appealing to me."
