OREGON STATE QUOTES

Head Coach Mike Riley

On the results from today’s game…

“You always want to get off to a good start. It just goes to show you the team that plays the best that day wins the game. They played better today and I thought they got some terrific play out of a quite a few of their people, especially their quarterback, he was outstanding.  They made the plays to win the game.”

On EWU Vernon Adams’ performance…

“You don’t really prepare for something like that and we were a step behind. He was eluding tackles, which I think was a major factor in the game, the number of tackles that he made us miss and number of missed opportunities we had to sack him. And then there were the big plays he made. Early in the game he set the tone for how the rest of the game went.”

On the performance of his offense…

“It was fun to see. The one thing we knew needed to try to do was we needed to get more people involved. Last year we had the combination of Markus and Brandin, and we don’t have Markus anymore so what is that going to look like? Probably the disappointing thing today offensively was not running the ball as well as we’d like to do. We lost Isaac Seumalo today before the game, and he was scheduled to start. He went out for warm-ups but we had to pull him out. Hopefully we get him back because he will help with running the ball.”

On the performance of Sean Mannion

“I thought he was efficient throwing the football and I thought he spread the ball around really well. He made a bunch of nice plays and had a good variety; he seemed to be seeing things really well.”

On the performance of the receivers…

“I am encouraged by their performance because that is what we are looking for. We have to look at the positives that we can get from this game and then obviously work on some things as well. There was enough encouraging stuff today to say that we can do this, we can get this thing squared away.”

OSU Quarterback Sean Mannion

On if there are any positives about this game…

“I thought that our team fought hard. Eastern Washington outplayed us. We knew that they were a good team coming into it and it is something that we saw on film and have been saying all week. I think that our team fought until the bitter end so if there are any positives, it is that we didn’t fold when we could have and we continued to play as hard as we could.”

On the performance by the defense…

“No one played a perfect game, the offense especially. We have our defense’s back a hundred times out of a hundred and they would do the same for us. I am not going to sit here and say that the offense played well because that isn’t true. Our defense fought hard. I think that our offense left some plays on the field, but all that we can do as a team is continue to grow and overcome this by working hard next week.”

On if the emotions feel like a flashback to a couple of year ago…

“Honestly that is pretty far in the past at this point. I think that you could say that there are similarities, because you want to start the season off right in any opening game, but I think that Eastern Washington just played a great game. We knew that they were a good team and I think that our offense left a few plays on the field. I know in the first half we had a couple three-and-outs and left our defense hanging, but our team fought really hard until the end, so if there is any positive, that’s it.”

On not recovering from a loss like this two years ago and why this year is different…

“I think that a lot of the guys who went through that are still on the team, which is one reason. At the same time, I think that our team’s mentality is that we are not going to let anything get in the way. Rashaad Reynolds said something great in the locker room. He said that there are two ways that we can go about this: we can either lay down or stand up and overcome this by working harder than we ever have. Obviously, that is the route that we are going to take.”

On his performance today…

“I think that there was some good and bad. I tried to be active and take good care of the ball. I think that I missed a few plays. Obviously whenever you have a three-and-out, you have to take that on yourself and I think we had a few of those in the first half. Like I said, I think that I left our defense hanging. There were some good plays, but the only thing that matters is the final score.”

On Mannion’s connection with the tight ends…

“It is definitely something that we emphasized throughout camp and I think that we have grown to have a lot of depth at that position with Connor [Hamblet], Caleb [Smith], Kellen [Clute] and Tyler Perry. I think that looking to tight ends is something that we are going to continue to do. I think that we are going to run our plays and they may be open or they may not. I don’t think it was intentional, but it just kind of happened that way.”

On their defense and why it was frustrating…

“I thought that their defense played well. Storm [Woods] said they flowed well and I would agree with that. In the passing game there were a lot of tight windows and our receivers made some great catches for us. They are a really good team and I think it showed by the way their defense played by disguising their coverage. That is something that we really studied and I think they did a great job with it.”

Stom Woods Quotes:

On how the Beavers move past this game…

“It was a tough game, those guys came and probably played their best game, we didn’t and it was as simple as that. They made plays where it counted and we didn’t. We are a family, so we can’t let this one win bring us down. This loss doesn’t define us as a team and we just have to pull it together and focus on next week. Come out Monday and practise hard and get ready for Hawaii.”

On his mentality moving forward..

“It hurts, it hurts really badly, we come in here the top 25 team and practiced so hard, the loss, it really hurts; we just have to pull it back together. There are a lot more games to be played, so we have to hold our heads up high and just continue to grow and learn from it and don’t take no setbacks from the loss.”

Michael Doctor Quotes:

At half time what did Banker say?

“Just to regroup, we know what type of defense we want to be and we know what type of defense we are. We just have to come out there and stop the run game initially and make them one dimensional.”

On the last Eastern Washington touchdown…

I was actually trying to get out there to him, just missed the tackle and couldn’t get out there fast enough, he’s a pretty good quarterback and he went out and took a chance.

Rashaad Reynolds

On what he told the team in post game…

“I just made sure that I just told the team that we can go two ways with this, I mean obviously it’s a tough loss. We have been there before but at the end of the day, like Sean said, we can either learn from it and be the team we know we can be, or we can just lay down and that’s not something we want to do”

On why this year is going to be different as opposed to two years ago. ..

“We have to the team to do it, obviously we didn’t play our best today. Eastern Washington came out and played a better game but at the end of the day I think we have the guys to do it we have to just be focused and pay more attention.”

On if Eastern Washington did anything offensively that was surprising…

“No, they did everything that we have seen on film, for the most part.  The quarterback made some great plays, running and made some nice passes.  They did everything that we knew they were going to do.”

On how hard is it to be a defensive back going against Eastern Washington…

“It’s pretty tough, when you have a guy that extends the play, you have to cover them for longer than normal. But, that’s no excuse that’s what we’re here for as defensive backs. We didn’t play to our potential today. As a unit, we have to step up”

Connor Hamlett

On defense letting down offense…

“No, there’s no blame on this game... it’s on everyone.  I mean it was nice to see that we put up a lot of points, but we’ve got to play as a team.”

On underestimating an FCS opponent…

“Eastern played a great game. Now we know that we can’t just take anyone lightly. They just played better than us, credit to Eastern. We will come in on Monday ready to work.”

On worries after first half…

“We didn’t think it was bad, we knew it was on us. We weren’t playing well. Eastern played well but there were some things we could have done a lot better. There wasn’t any panic or anything in the locker room. We knew we had to come out and play the way we played all fall camp and like last year.

On what offense can do better…

“Just sustain drives, we had a couple three and outs early in the first half. Those are never good especially when the other offense has long drives. We just need to put together more drives.”

EASTERN WASHINGTON QUOTES

Head Coach Beau Baldwin

On how big the win was for the program…

“This is a huge win. We aren’t talking about an average team, we are talking about a bowl team and a big-time opponent that’s well coached. It took every ounce of every minute in this sucker to get it done.”

On what was going through his mind on the potential game-tying field goal by Oregon State…

“I thought it went in, and I was going to be so upset. But whatever. We would have played OT and come up with a few more plays. But it didn’t go in, and our guys just fought to the end.”

On if he thought his offense would be so good today…

“You never know. Every game is different, and I mean that. Now people will start thinking ‘oh wow, you’re going to go win the whole thing.’ You just have to take each game as it comes. There will be some games against lesser opponents that might end up being 17-14. You just never know. But when you’re in a game like this, that has this type of rhythm, you just have to roll with it.”

On the play of quarterback Vernon Adams…

“It was impressive. He was doing it with his legs and making all the right decisions. That was the thing I loved about it. He was making all of these plays, but he was also taking care of the football and being smart when he needed to. But it was an all-around team effort.”

On the fourth-down conversion in the fourth quarter…

“I’m a little risky by nature, and honestly I think that’s how you win. You may come up snake eyes once in a while and that’s fine, but you have to go for it, especially in games like this. I’ll still be calculated. There might be times, in different times, where I punt there. But not in this game; not with the way it was going. It felt like the right thing to do was go for it. You know what, if we had missed it, I would have been excited for the D to go out there and get a stop.”

On what he learned about his team today…

“We just know how to fight and we know how to not let any environment get to us. That’s the biggest thing. Even the young guys weren’t all wide-eyed, so I learned a lot. But you’re going to learn a lot, having to come back off this, and play next week. You will learn a lot, and I’m going to be harder on guys about it. We need to treat next week almost like we lost this game, in a strange way. You have to take that focus, good or bad, and go into week two.”

Quarterback Vernon Adams

On coming back after the injury…

“I took an IV, came back and it felt good to get back on the field.”

On how much fun it is to be the quarterback when the offense is clicking like that…

“It was so much fun. I appreciate everything.”

On what this win can do for the team…

“What we are dealing with is unfinished business. The end of the road last December against Sam Houston State, we want to keep it going. We want to get to the national championship this year. I just love my team and I’m so proud of this win.”

On the game-winning touchdown run…

“I said ‘coach, let’s just go with the boot.’ I’m so thankful I scored.”

On the feeling when the ref said no good on the potential game-tying field goal…

“It was my fault. I dropped the ball on the extra point so a field goal could tie it. When it missed, I went crazy and started rushing the field. I was so happy. It was crazy.”
