The 2014 Show Starts
The Oregon State volleyball team opens the 2014 season Friday when the Beavers travel Logan, Utah for the Utah State Volleyball Invitational. They will start the year against the Saint Mary’s Gaels Friday. Aug. 29 before facing the host Aggies and the Idaho State Bengals on Saturday Aug. 30.

Against The Field
Oregon State has limited history against its three opponents having a 2-2 record against the Gaels, 1-1 against the Aggies and a perfect 7-0 record against the Bengals. The Beavers have not faced the Gaels since the ‘04 season, the Bengals since ‘012 but faced the Aggies in ‘11, winning in four sets.
The Utah State Aggies will open the brand new Kirby Court at Wayne Estes Center Friday, with the Beavers and Gaels of Saint Mary’s being the first game to be played on the brand new court. The 32,000-square foot facility seats 1,400.
Away From Home
Oregon State sported an 9-12 mark in matches played away from Gill Coliseum last season, including an 4-0 record in neutral-site matches. The Beavers will play 19 games away from Gill this year, nine in the first month of the season and 10 during Pac-12 play.
The Beavers will face three opponents during the 2014 that they also played during the 2013 season. The Michigan Woliverines will travel to Corvallis for the 2014 Oregon State home opener, Friday Sept. 12 and will quickly be followed by the No. 16 Michigan State Spartans. The final repeat team from the 2013 season is Long Beach State, who Oregon State will play Saturday, Sept. 20 at the CSU Bakerfield tournament.
Defoe No More
Becky Defoe, finished the 2013 season with 511 digs, the third most for a season in program history, trailing only her totals from the 2012 and 2011 season. She set the career record for digs in program history with 2,029 during the 2013 season, but the Beavers will have to replace the now graduated libero as they enter the 2014 season.
Record Book Watch
Senior captain Arica Nassar enters the season 23rd on the career kills list with 777, she needs only four kills to take 21st on the list and could enter the top-15 by the end of the season. Senior Tayla Woods enters the 2014 season sitting with 1,868 assists at 8th place on the career list for the program. Woods could enter the top-5 by the end of the season.
How They Shape Up - Returners
Oregon State returns nine student-athletes who played for the team in 2013 as well as Katelyn Driscoll who missed the season due to injury. Now sophomore Lila Toner led the team with 280 kills, a 2.75 per set average. She also finished fourth on the team with 194 digs, a 1.90 per set rate. Tayla Woods returns at setter after finishing the 2014 season with 1076 assists and 253 digs. Arica Nassar and Laura Schaudt both finished 2013 with over 200 kills apiece, Nassar with 234 and Schaudt with 258. Darby Reeder tallied 195 digs as a defensive specialist, but will see increased playing time at libero with Becky Defoe graduating off the team.
How They Shape Up - Newcomers
Oregon State welcomes eight new members to the 2014 team. Transfers Emilie Wilmes and Dana Backlund join the team from Long Beach State and Florida respectively. Freshmen McKenna Hollingsworth, Hannah Troutman, Maddy Gravley, Lanesha Reagan, and Mary-Kate Marshall come to Oregon State from four different states, while Kory Cheshire joins the team from Alberta, Canada.
Opponents In The Polls
OSU is due to play Michigan and Michigan State in the third week of the season. The Wolverines are currently receiving votes and the Spartans are ranked No. 16. Four Pac-12 schools are also in the top 25 to start the season, along with another four that are receiving votes.
2013 In Review
Oregon State finished the 2013 season with a record of 9-22 after going 9-2 in non-conference play.
Lisveych And The Staff
Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych is in his 10th season piloting the program, and needs only two more wins to reach 100 with the Beavers, he already has the most career wins in program history. He is joined by associate head coach Mark Barnard, who is also in his 10th year. Emily Hiza returns for her fourth season as an assistant coach, while KC Bennett joins the team for her first year as a volunteer assistant coach.
