CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team held their first practices of the 2014 season Saturday morning. The team has a mix of newcomers and returners to the program with nine 2013 letter winners, including five starters, as well as nine newcomers for the 2014 season.
“There’s a good balance of veterans and new people to the team” said head coach Taras Liskevych. “We plan on having a mix of upperclassmen and newcomers contributing in games this year. We kept practice generic to start and will do that for the first few days, so we can find the best constituency on the court before we move forward.”
The team started practice at 9 a.m. Saturday and then followed that with an afternoon session at 4 p.m. After a long summer, the players were happy to be out on the court as a team again.
“It felt really good to get back out there with a full practice,” said senior setter Tayla Woods. “We’ve all worked really hard this summer. We’re really excited to get the season started so we can prove ourselves.”
With all the new faces to the program the Beavers will have a different look on the court this year.
“We’ve still got a lot of time before the start of the season, my philosophy is that you have to ease your team into the season,” said Liskevych. “We’ve got to mesh the new people together with all the returners.”
The Beaver freshmen got a jump start on getting to know their teammates as spent the summer in Corvallis living with the seniors on the team.
“It allowed us to get to know them and brought the whole team closer together,” said senior Arica Nassar. “Now at practice we are able to focus on working hard since we’ve had the summer to get to know each other and already bonded as a team.”
The Beavers will start the season in Logan, Utah Friday, Aug. 29 when they face Saint Mary’s. The team will have 14 games on the Pac-12 Networks during the 2014 season, including the home opener against Michigan Friday, Sept. 12.
