CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State senior Ya Garcia was named to the Mexican National Team roster on Sunday evening and will appear at this week’s General Tire World Cup of Softball IX in Irvine, Calif. from July 7-13.

Garcia is one of three members of the Oregon State softball program that will be at the World Cup. Fellow senior Dani Gilmore is playing for the Philippines and OSU head coach Laura Berg is on staff with Team USA.

The World Cup of Softball is being contested at Bill Barber Park in Irvine and includes teams from the United States, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Mexico, Philippines, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. The countries will play a round robin over six days from July 7-12. After pool play, seeds will be determined for the final day on July 13 to determine matchups for games that decide the champion and order of finish.

Mexico begins its tournament with an exhibition against the United States tonight at 7 p.m. Following that contest, it will face the Philippines, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Venezuela, the U.S. and Canada in pool play. Saturday's 10 a.m. PT first pitch against the Team USA will air live nationally on ESPN2.

Garcia has started all 166 games in her three years and is a career .257 hitter. As a sophomore in 2013, she was named All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention after batting .307, scoring 20 runs and stealing 10 bases in 13 attempts. Garcia’s first year in Corvallis garnered her Pac-12 All-Freshman Honorable Mention accolades when she hit .242, scored 22 runs and handled the bat well, tying for fourth in the conference with nine sacrifice bunts. This past season, Garcia scored 25 times and hit her first career home run against San Diego State (Feb. 6).
