CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State’s Michele Turney was officially added to the NCAA Division I West Preliminary Track and Field Championships in the triple jump, the NCAA announced late Monday. The sophomore will join teammates Kinsey Gomez (10K) and Melissa Ausman (discus) at the meet from May 29-31 at the University of Arkansas’ John McDonnell Field.
Turney earned her entry by way of the 40’ 4.75” mark she posted to finish seventh at the Pac-12 Track and Field Championships in Pullman, Wash. on May 18.
The Beavers’ school record holder, who has set and re-set OSU’s best triple jump mark four times in less than two seasons, ranks 52nd in the west region. Four scratches allowed Turney to move into the top 48 and earn a trip to Fayetteville.
That conference championship leap was wind-aided, but her fifth attempt of 40’ 0.75” was not and is the new Oregon State record. The Corvallis native, who had been unable to surpass the 40-foot barrier in each of her first 13 collegiate competitions, has now done it twice in as many tries. Turney won the triple jump at the OSU High Performance Meet in Corvallis on May 2 with a mark of 40’.
For the fifth straight season, the country has been split into two regions - East and West - with the top 48 athletes (24 relays) in each region qualifying for the Preliminary Round. The East Preliminary is being held in Fayetteville, Ark., with the East Preliminary taking place at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. The top 12 finishers in each event at the regional rounds will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 11-14.
