SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Rachel Picknell PR’d in both the hammer and the discus as Oregon State throwers wrapped up the first day of competition at the UCSD Triton Invitational in San Diego, Calif. on Friday.
The sophomore transfer from Sacramento City College began the weekend with a big personal best in the hammer throw. On her first attempt, Picknell posted a mark of 160’ 4”, good for fourth in her flight and 30th out of 48 competitors. That toss crushed her previous PR of 146’ 3” from the Oregon Preview on March 22, extending her own school record.
In the evening, Picknell’s discus throw of 136’ 2” was an inch farther than her previous best achieved at last Saturday’s Oregon Relays.
Freshman Melissa Ausman led the way for OSU in that event with a mark of 146’ 1”, which placed third in her flight and 25th overall. Sophomore Kayla Fleskes’ throw of 141’ 11” was good for 31st out of nearly 50 entries. It was just Fleskes’ second-ever discus mark of over 140 feet. She PR’d at the Oregon Twilight last May 3 with a toss of 145’ 1”.
On Saturday, Fleskes will compete in the javelin along with Christina MacDonald. Picknell and Ausman will be in the shot put at 11 a.m. and Michele Turney will wrap up the meet in the triple jump around 5:30 p.m.
