LOWELL, Ore. - The Oregon State Women's Rowing team came up with a big win in the Varsity 8 over Duke at the second annual Oregon State Classic on Saturday at Dexter Lake.

The Beavers posted a 6:32.4 to edge out the Blue Devils by about five seconds (6:37.53) in their morning session of the V8.

Dexter Lake would see 13 races throughout the day featuring some of the nations finest crews, including No. 3 Ohio State, No. 9 Michigan, No. 11 Stanford, No. 20 Oregon State and Duke.

“The event worked out great," Oregon State head coach Emily Ford said. "I have to give huge thanks to all of the officials, volunteers and folks from OSU who helped to make it run seamlessly.  Of course the weather helped as well, we couldn’t have asked for better conditions on Dexter Lake.  It was near perfect.”

Oregon State claimed a second place finish in the first heat of the Varsity 4 with a time of 7:39.14, following just behind Duke with a 7:38.1.

In the first heat of the Second Varsity 8, the Beavs (6:43.16) would claim second once again, finishing nearly two seconds after the Blue Devils (6:41.8).

Oregon State competed against itself in the Open 4 in the morning and afternoon sessions. On the first go around, OSU 'D' raced well, crossing the finish in 8:08.3, ahead of OSU 'E' (8:46.13). Later on, OSU 'C' cruised to victory with a 7:56.4, followed by OSU 'D' (8:04.43) and OSU 'E' (8:24.85).

The V8 race of the afternoon sessions was a thriller, as Ohio State claimed the win with a 6:24.5, followed close by Stanford with a 6:26.02. Michigan would end with a 6:30.95, narrowly edging Oregon State's 6:31.73. Duke fell behind and posted a 6:38.96.

“This was an incredibly exciting race for the whole field," Ford said. There was a lot of overlap in the early part of the race with all crews with a few lead changes in the segment.  Eventually Ohio State, Stanford and Michigan pulled out while we worked to get ahead of Duke, who had a very strong start. I was very happy with the levels of aggression and composure in this crew.  They took a great step for OSU rowing this weekend and they definitely gave the fans a great race to watch.”

Up next, the Beavs will head out to the Clemson Invitational on Saturday, Apr. 19 and 20 in Clemson, S.C.
