PALM DESERT, Calif. – The Oregon State men’s golf team finished the 23-team Wyoming Cowboy Desert Intercollegiate in fifth place and senior David Fink tied for 10th on Sunday.
Fink held the clubhouse lead after the second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament but was unable to find the magic he had the first two days as he shot 4-over 76. He still posted a top-10 finish with a 4-under 69-67-76--212 at the par-72, 7,305-yard Classic Club.
The Beavers also slipped a bit as they shot a 1-over 289 on Sunday after firing back-to-back 5-under 283’s the first two days to finish fifth with a 9-under 855. Oregon won the team title with a 27-under 837 and Colorado finished second with a 24-under 840.
“In the end it probably feels a lot worse than it really is because we were all pulling for Dave to do well,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “As a team I thought we did a lot of things much better than we have the first two events of the spring season.
“We still need to clean up small, silly mistakes that in the course of a three-day tournament add up to a bunch of shots. But our biggest area of improvement needs to come in how we swing the club. We’ve got to hit every shot the same and not be consumed by the result and more about the process.”
Freshman Kevin Murphy and junior Scott Kim both shot sub-par rounds on Sunday with Murphy posting a 2-under 70 and Kim carding a 1-under 71. Murphy finished in a tie for 19th place with a 3-under 70-73-70--213 and Kim moved up eight spots into a tie for 42nd with a 1-over 74-72-71--217.
Julien Brun of TCU claimed medalist honors with a 13-under 72-66-65--203.
The Beavers return to action on Monday, March 10 and Tuesday, March 11 at the San Diego Intercollegiate in San Diego, Calif.
