SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The No. 11 Oregon State gymnastics team scored 196.450, its highest road score of the season, in a loss to No. 4 Utah. Chelsea Tang scored a season-best 39.350 to finish third in the all-around to lead the Beavers.
“We had some changes to the lineups and things didn’t go exactly as planned but I’m pleased with how this team keeps fighting and picking each other up when things don’t perfectly,” Chaplin said. “We’ll re-group this week and will be ready Saturday for Nebraska and Arizona State.”
The Beavers (7-2) topped the 49-point plateau on three events including a season-high 49.275 on the vault and the Utes (8-1) scored 197.575 for the win.
OSU got off to a solid start with three career-highs to post 49.150 in the opening rotation. Madeline Gardiner led off the meet for the Beavers with a personal-best 9.775 and Taylor Keeker followed with a career-tying 9.80. Following a fall, the end of the OSU rotation buckled down with Erika Aufiero tallying 9.875 and Hannah Casey posting a career-high 9.90.
Despite a solid opening rotation on the uneven bars, the Beavers trailed 49.625-49.150 heading to the vault. The Beavers posted two career-highs, Aufiero scored 9.875 and Cerise Witherby tallied 9.80, and two season-highs with Chelsea Tang scoring 9.825 and Brittany Harris a 9.875. Keeker added a 9.875 and Kelsi Blalock scored 9.825 to complete the vault rotation as the Beavers set a season-high for the second week in a row with a 49.275.
On the floor exercise for the third rotation, the Beavers came together to reach the 49-point mark for the third time in the meet scoring 49.150. Gardiner scored 9.85 to lead the Beavs while a foursome of Witherby, Tang, Harris and Nicole Turner added scores of 9.825.
The beam team fought through a bit of adversity after a fall early in the lineup by Blalock, Witherby established a career-high of 9.775 in the lead-off spot and Gardiner added a 9.775 of her own. Harris scored 9.825 and Tang closed out the night with a 9.90.
Oregon State returns to Gill Coliseum next week for the final time in 2014 when the Beavers host Arizona State and Nebraska on Senior Night. The meet is slated for Sat., Mar. 1 at 6 p.m.
