PALM DESERT, Calif. – The Oregon State men’s golf team sits in third place after shooting a 5-under 283 in the first round of the Wyoming Cowboy Desert Intercollegiate on Friday.

The Pac-12 holds down the top three spots after the opening round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament as Colorado is first with a 16-under 272 and Oregon is second with a 12-under 276. The 23-team field is competing at the par-72, 7,305-yard Classic Club.

Senior David Fink carded his third consecutive round in the 60’s with a 3-under 69 that put him in a tie for eighth place. Freshman Kevin Murphy shot a 2-under 70 to put him in a tie for 13th, while sophomore Brian Jung and junior Alex Franklin each shot an even-par 72 for a tie for 33rd place. Junior Scott Kim posted a 2-over 74.

“Overall, it was a pretty good start,” Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. “We made an emphasis to try and make sure we got off to a fast start and we did that. Tomorrow we just need to keep it going. Pace of play today was six hours plus, and in the middle of the round it seemed like we lost a little steam. Tomorrow we need to do a better job of being a little more self aware and maintain the same focus and intensity throughout the round.”

The Beavers will tee off beginning at 8:50 a.m. on Saturday and be paired with UT Arlington, Oregon and Colorado. There is no live scoring for the tournament.
