Beavers Buzz Cardinal in Pink Out
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 16 Oregon State gymnastics team tallied season-highs on all four events and Chelsea Tang scored 39.350 in the all-around en route to a 197.100-195.750 upset of No. 12 Stanford Monday night.
“I’m really proud of our athletes,” head coach Tanya Chaplin said. “We have worked through a lot of different things. We had some stumbles when we went to UCLA, which made us take a look at where we were at and what we needed to do. The athletes and staff have worked hard at trying to have a different energy and focus as we go on and I’m really happy to see the progress they’re making.”
The Beavers topped the 49-point mark on all four events and exceeded 197.000 for the first time in 2014.
OSU vaulted to an early lead scoring 49.075 in the first rotation while Stanford struggled with two missed routines on the bars to score 48.500 giving the Beavers a comfortable lead from the outset. Kelsi Blalock led the Beavers with a 9.875 while Brittany Harris and Taylor Keeker each posted scores of 9.85.
The bars lineup held course scoring 49.275 as a team behind season-high scores of 9.925 by Harris and Erika Aufiero.
Ahead 98.350-97.775 at the end of the second rotation, but the Beavers pushed the lead further with a fantastic beam set scoring 49.275. Tang established a career-high 9.925 on beam which was preceded by Madeline Gardiner’s own personal-best of 9.875.
With the meet well in hand heading for the home stretch with a 147.625-146.550, Oregon State finished with a flourish scoring 49.475 in the final rotation. Five Beavers set or tied career-bests with Tang, Gardiner and Nicole Turner posting scores of 9.875, McMillan tallying a 9.90 and Blalock turning in a 9.95.
The meet was OSU’s ninth annual Pink Out meet which is designed to raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. The gymnastics program and its booster club, the 10.0 Club, hosted the Pink Out Breakfast and Silent Auction on Saturday. OSU’s “Pink Week” concludes Fri., Feb. 7 with the women’s basketball game against Washington State.
"This is always a special competition for us,” Chaplin said. “It is inspiring to listen to the stories of what these cancer patients go through and how much the community supports them. The community is their team and that's how we rally behind each other when we are competing and it's inspirational to our team to come out here and compete in their honor.”
Oregon State remains at home for the third straight meet Sat., Feb. 8 when California travels to Corvallis to take on the Gill Coliseum at 6 p.m. The Beavers wrap up their homestand Sat., Feb. 15 with the annual Comfort Suites Invitational when they host Boise State, Utah State and Seattle Pacific.
