CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State baseball team will open the season ranked in the top three by both Baseball America and Perfect Game USA as each media organization released top 25 rankings on Monday. The Beavers are No. 2 by Baseball America and No. 3 by Perfect Game USA.
In the Baseball America rankings, Oregon State is behind only Virginia and ahead of No. 3 Indiana, No. 4 Cal State Fullerton and No. 5 North Carolina State. The Beavers’ No. 2 ranking is the club’s highest ever to open a season.
Perfect Game also has Virginia at No. 1 while placing Fullerton at No. 2. The third-ranked Beavers are ahead of No. 4 Florida State and No. 5 Indiana.
Oregon State is one of three Pac-12 Conference teams ranked by Baseball America, joining UCLA and Oregon. Perfect Game has the same three ranked and also includes Arizona State.
The rankings come on the heels of the season, which opens in 18 days against Gonzaga at Tempe Diablo Stadium in Arizona. The Beavers will be defending their conference crown in 2014, and finished the 2013 season ranked fourth after completing the year with a 52-13 record. OSU returns two weekend starters in Andrew Moore and Ben Wetzler and four position starters from a year ago – Dylan Davis, Michael Conforto, Andy Peterson and Kavin Keyes.
Moore, Wetzler, Conforto, Davis and Scott Schultz have all earned preseason All-America honors.
