Corvallis, Ore. – The No. 20 Oregon State wrestling team narrowly fell to No. 22 North Dakota State 19-17 Sunday afternoon.

The Bison got on the board early, claiming the first nine points of the match at 125 and 133. North Dakota State’s Hunter Weber pinned Oregon State’s Joey Palmer (125), collecting six quick points, while Justin LaVelle topped Drew Van Anrooy (133) by a 4-2 decision, bringing the score to 9-0.

Oregon State’s Joey Delgado (141) got the Beavs back on track with a 9-4 decision over Clay Cathey, reducing the Bison’s lead to six. Seniors Scott Sakaguchi (149) and RJ Pena (157) followed that with back-to-back major decisions over their opponents. Sakaguchi defeated Tyler Diamond 14-3, while Pena topped Nick Olejnik 15-4, giving the Beavers an 11-9 lead.

North Dakota State claimed the next three bouts, starting with Steve Monk who earned a 9-0 major decision over Toney Chay (165). Hayden Zillmer then collected a 3-1 sudden victory decision over Oregon State’s Joe Latham (174), bringing the score to 16-11 in favor of the Bison.

Kurtis Julson tallied the last three points for the Bison with a 9-4 decision over Oregon State’s Austin Morehead (184), giving North Dakota State an eight point lead going into the final three bouts.

Oregon State’s Taylor Meeks (197) earned a 9-2 decision over Tyler Lehmann, bringing the Beavs within five. In the final bout, Amarveer Dhesi (HWT) tallied three more points for Oregon State with a 10-4 decision over Evan Knutson, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the Bison, ending the match 19-17.

The Beavers return to Gill Coliseum next weekend as they host Lehigh and Oklahoma in their last two home duals of the season.

Head Coach Jim Zalesky on the team’s performance today…

“It was good; I thought some guys performed better. I like what I saw at 141, 149, 157… at 197 and HWT, I like what I saw there. 174 and 184 gave great effort; I thought we were right in there with two close matches… The key was 125 and 133; we’re just not wrestling there like we can wrestle… Overall I thought it was a good performance, we just gave up a pin and some bonus points.”

On preparation for next weekend…

“We just have to get back in the gym and fix those mistakes. We fix those mistakes and we keep moving forward and look to get that win next weekend.”
