Beavers Finish 3-0 at EMU Duals

Ypsilanti, Mich. – The Oregon State wrestling team wrapped up the Eastern Michigan University Duals with victories over Michigan State, Northern Illinois, and Central Michigan, establishing a 3-0 start to the season.

The Beavers first cruised past Michigan State with a score of 29-9. Pat Rollins (125) started the Beavers off on a high note by pinning Brenan Lyon in 1:45.

Joey Delgado (141) and Taylor Meeks (197) added a combined 10 points to the Oregon State’s score with a pair of tech falls against Michigan State’s Brian Gibbs and Luke Jones, respectively. Alex Elder (165) tallied a 13-0 major decision against Kevin Nash to give the Beavers an 18-6 lead at the time.

With decisions from Scott Sakaguchi (149), Joe Latham (174), and Amarveer Dhesi (HWT), the Beavers were able to secure the 29-9 victory in their first match of the day.

Next the Beavers faced Northern Illinois, eventually claiming a 27-9 victory. The Huskies gathered their 9 points in the second and third bouts with a decision over Drew Van Anrooy (133) and a pin against Delgado. The Beavers then won the next seven matches, propelling them to a victory.

Once again, Rollins got the Beavers on the board first with a 3-2 decision over Braun Marquez. Major decisions from Sakaguchi, Latham, and Meeks tallied another 12 points for Oregon State. RJ Pena (157), Brian Engdahl (184), Elder, and Dhesi each collected decisions over their opponents, helping the Beavers cruise to a 27-9 victory.

In the final match of the day, Oregon State worked its way past Central Michigan, ending with a final score of 22-13. The Beavers succumbed to an early 10-0 deficit with a major decision over Rollins and decisions over Van Anrooy, and Delgado. Oregon State countered with three decision victories from Sakaguchi, Pena and Elder, bringing the score to 10-9.

Central Michigan took the 174 weight class by decision over Latham, extending their lead to four. However, Engdahl, Meeks, and Dhesi were able to claim three consecutive victories for the Beavers by forfeit and decision, rocketing Oregon State past Central Michigan for their third win of the day.
