Corvallis, Ore. – Oregon State senior Scott Sakaguchi slides into the No. 1 spot in this week’s rankings, as released by InterMat and The Open Mat on Tuesday.
Oklahoma’s Kendric Maple was ranked first in the 149 lb. weight class in various preseason polls, but dropped to a No. 2 ranking by InterMat and No. 3 ranking by The Open Mat after losing to Bloomsburg’s Bryce Butler over the weekend. Sakaguchi, who didn’t wrestle this past weekend at the Mike Clock Open, now tops Maple and sits as the No. 1 wrestler at 149.
In addition to junior Taylor Meeks, Oregon State now has two wrestlers ranked No. 1 going into the regular season. Meeks, who defeated Minnesota’s No. 2 Scott Schiller at the All-Star Classic and went 4-0 at the Mick Clock Open, maintains his place atop the 197 lb. weight class.
Senior RJ Pena, who also went 4-0 at the Mike Clock Open, continues to sit at a No. 5 ranking by InterMat and a No.3 ranking by The Open Mat.
One other Oregon State wrestler, sophomore Joey Palmer, cracked his way into the rankings this week. The Open Mat lists Palmer as the No. 20 wrestler in the 125 lb. weight class.
Just as in preseason, InterMat lists Oregon State as the No. 6 ranked team heading into the regular season.
