Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State women’s soccer team tallied another win, Sunday, topping Arizona State 1-0.

The Beavers came out looking like a rejuvenated team, full of energy and ready to get after the Sun Devils. After 45 minutes of play, the score stood at 0-0, both teams showing their physicality and putting shots on frame.

In the 71st minute, senior captain Jacy Drobney stepped up to take a free kick for the Beavers just outside the box. She drove the ball low, straight at teammate Erin Uchacz, who redirected it past the hands of the keeper, giving the Beavs a 1-0 lead.

Both teams continued to put pressure on their opponent and the Sun Devils were looking for the equalizer.

In the 86th minute, ASU’s Cali Farquharson was able to get past the Beavers’ back line, giving herself a “1 v. 1” with Oregon State’s Sammy Jo Prudhomme. Farquharson shot the ball low and Prudhomme made a game-saving dive, keeping the Sun Devils off the board.

The Beavers would close out the rest of the game and walk away with a 1-0 victory, advancing them to 3-9-2 on the season and 1-3-1 in Pac-12 play.

Drobney on the free kick…

“I just wanted to keep it low and on frame. It was close enough that if I just drove it, it would go in the goal. So I just drove it at Erin (Uchacz) and she was able to tap it in.”

On the team’s performance…

“The big thing for us is that we were winning first and second balls and getting into tackles, making sure that they had no room to play. There was a different mentality from everyone that was out here.”

Uchacz on her game-winning goal…

“It felt pretty good to go up first. In the past games it has been frustrating because we have been giving up goals early. Today it was nice to get the first goal to give us a little extra confidence going into the end of the game.”

On the team’s performance…

“I think we played well today. We played with a little fire under our butts, which we haven’t been doing lately. We were going forward with a purpose and did a better job of keeping the ball.”

Prudhomme on her save at the end of the game…

“At first we thought it was offsides, but he didn’t call it so I was like, ‘Okay, I’ve got to win this ball.’ I came out, trying to cut her angle. Then she took a touch wide, which was good for me because it was going to be really hard to get the ball back across her body. I played it like I normally would and I was able to react.”

Head Coach Linus Rhode on the win…

“We talked after the game on Friday and we said that it’s a mentality. Today, that was our main objective, to bring the right mentality from the start. We did that and I think the girls had the right thoughts attacking and defensively. It was a great effort so I’m really happy for them because it’s been a long time coming. We’ve been close on a few games and to get the result today was awesome.”

On following the game plan…

“I think today was one of the better games where we did do that. We executed the game from beginning to end and we stuck to the game plan. When we do that, we are a very good team. When we have our discipline, keep our shape, and play to our strengths we are a very good team.
