Oregon State University quarterback Sean Mannion has been added to the Maxwell Award Watch List and cornerback Steven Nelson to the Bednarik Watch List, it was announced Tuesday. Mannion joins receiver Brandin Cooks on the Maxwell roster and Nelson and defensive end Scott Crichton are teammates on the Bednarik list.
Mannion currently leads the nation for passing yards per game at 403.6 and for touchdown passes with 21. The 2013 two-time Pac-12 Conference and Manning Award Player of the Week has passed for 7,792 career yards, the most by a current Pac-12 quarterback and ranks No. 28 in the league’s record book.
The Maxwell Award has been presented annually since 1937 and in 1962 was won by Oregon State quarterback Terry Baker, among his many accolades including the Heisman Trophy.
Nelson, a first-year Beaver after transferring from the College of Sequoias in California, co-leads the nation with four interceptions. He was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week after returning an interception 16 yards for the winning score late in the game at San Diego State last month.
The Bednarik has been presented since 1995. Semifinalists for both awards will be announced Oct. 29 and the three finalists for each award will be unveiled Nov. 25. The recipients will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show Dec. 12 in Orlando, Fla.
