ERIN, Wis. – David Fink was named to Golf World magazine’s Top-50 male players to watch for the 2013-14 NCAA season, and he showed just why on Monday by firing a 2-under 70 to lead the Oregon State men’s golf team on day two at the Erin Hill Intercollegiate.

Oregon State finished the second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a 7-over 295 and sits in seventh place in the 14-team field with an 8-over 289-295--584. There is still time to make a move up the leaderboard with the Beavers only four strokes out of posting a third-place finish for the third time this fall season.

Stanford has complete control of the tournament with an 11-under 565, while SMU is second with an even-par 576, UCLA sits in third with a 4-over 580 and Northwestern and Oklahoma are tied for fourth with a 5-over 581.

Fink had three birdies -- all on par-3’s -- and one bogey at the par-72, 7,234-yard Erin Hills Golf Course to shoot the third sub-par round of his senior campaign and 33rd in his career. The solid round moved him from a tie for 17th place into a tie for fifth, and only two strokes out of the lead, with a 2-under 72-70--142.

A pair of Oregon State newcomers continued their strong play, as junior transfer Alex Franklin shot an even-par 72 for the second consecutive day, carding a team-best four birdies, and freshman Kevin Murphy shot a 2-over 74 with two birdies. Franklin is tied for 11th overall with an even-par 72-72--144 and Murphy is tied for 24th with a 3-over 73-74--177.

Freshman Conner Kumpula and sophomore Brian Jung had a tough time in the windy conditions on Monday as they shot a 7-over 79 and 8-over 80, respectively. Jung is currently tied for 50th with an 8-over 72-80--152 and Kumpula is tied for 60th with an 11-over 76-79--155.

Fink has a chance to win his first individual title as a collegian after posting a pair of second-place finishes last season. Bryson Dechambeau of SMU and Patrick Rodgers of Stanford hold the clubhouse lead through 36 holes with a 4-under 140, while Jim Liu and Cameron Wilson, both of Stanford, are tied for third with a 3-under 141. Harry Higgs of SMU and Ryan McCormick of St. John’s are tied with Fink with a 2-under 142.

The final round will begin with tee times at 8:30 a.m. CT (6:30 a.m. PT) on Tuesday off the first and 10th holes.
