PORTLAND – The Oregon State volleyball team swept through the North Harbour Marriott Challenge at University of Portland, punctuating play with a sweep of the Pilots Saturday night at the Chiles Center.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-20 and 25-14. The win sent head coach Taras Liskevych his 96th win at Oregon State, tying him with Jeff Mozzochi for the most in school history.

Arica Nassar was named the Most Valuable Player of the North Harbour Marriott Challenge, while Lila Toner and Becky Defoe were named to the all-tournament team.

Against the Pilots, the Beavers (7-2 overall) found themselves down early in both of the first two sets but showed resiliency to claim wins. In set three, Oregon State jumped ahead early and never relinquished the lead. OSU hit .208 in the third set while Portland was held to mins-.079.

The Beavers were led offensively by Toner, who tallied 12 kills. Oregon State finished with a .267 hitting percentage, and held Portland to a .039 clip.

That’s due in large part to Oregon State’s defense, which was strong in its three matches against Toledo, UC Davis and the Pilots. Defoe led the Beavers in digs all three matches and finished the weekend with 66 after recording 19 against Portland.

The Beavers had 57 digs to the Pilots’ 48. OSU also topped the Pilots at the net, recording eight blocks to just one for UP.

Oregon State started off strong, taking the first set, 25-18, behind a .308 hitting percentage while holding Portland (0-9) to a .089 clip. The Pilots led early, at 10-7, but the Beavers managed five of the next six points to go up for good.

Set two was similar in that the Beavers were behind early but managed to come back and hold on to the lead for a 25-20 victory. Down 10-7, Oregon State jumped into the lead at 14-13. The Beavers hit .263 during the frame and held Portland to .091.

The Beavers play their final non-conference matches of the 2013 regular season on Friday when visiting Long Beach State. Oregon State takes on Prairie View A&M at 1 p.m. PT, followed by Long Beach State at 7 p.m. The matches are part of the LBSU Mizuno Invitational but the Beavers will play only two contests during the trip.
