Corvallis, Ore. – The Oregon State Women’s Soccer Team closes out a tough weekend with a 1-0 loss to Hawai’i.
The Rainbow Wahine jumped out to an early lead with a goal in the 24th minute. Hawai’i’s Alex Colacchio drove the ball across the 18, finding the head of teammate Krystal Pascua who redirected it on frame. OSU’s Sammy Jo Prudhomme was able to punch the ball away, but it was Hawai’i’s Tiana Fujimoto who was there far post to put the ball in the back of the net.
Despite having a season high 13 shots, eight of which were in the second half, the Beavers were unable to find the equalizer, giving the Rainbow Wahine their second win of the season.
“I think what we need to figure out as a group is how to start the game the right way,” said Head Coach Linus Rhode. “That is what is missing right now; we need to figure out how to start the game strong.”
After a few tactical changes, the Beavers lifted their play in the second half, racking up eight shots, three of which were on frame.
“We made some tactical changes to give us a little more speed and some fresh legs; we also changed our formation in the second half,” Rhode said. “We wanted to connect more, and as the game started to progress we started doing a better job of that.”
“I thought Natalie Meiggs came on and did a good job; I thought Annie Govig came on and did a good job at outside back,” Rhode said. “I thought there was a lot of spark from a lot of players who haven’t really gotten a lot of minutes and that shows that we have players that can start or come in and do a good job.”
The Beavers return to action next Thursday as they take on Cal State Northridge, and will spend the next week preparing for the road trip.
“For us right now we are going to build on our play with the ball and keeping the ball a little bit more,” Rhode said. “More so than anything else, we’ll be looking to start out strong.”
