PORTLAND, Ore. –  The Oregon State men’s soccer team swept the 2013 Portland Nike Invitational awards, which were announced today by the University of Portland. Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Bersano was named Outstanding Defensive Player, while senior Josh Smith and junior Khiry Shelton were named Co-Outstanding Offensive Players. The Beavers won the tournament title as the only team to complete the event with two victories, beating Cleveland State 3-0 on Friday, before topping UC Davis 2-0 on Sunday.

Bersano recorded 14 saves over the weekend, en route to a pair of clean sheets. The Beaver sophomore currently leads the Pac-12 in saves per game with 7.0.

Smith scored his first career goal on Friday, coming off the bench to give Oregon State its first lead of the 2013 season. The Federal Way, Wash., native followed that up by playing the full 90 minutes on Sunday.

Shelton tallied an assist on freshman Ole Sandnes goal in Friday’s contest, and then converted a penalty kick on Sunday to seal the victory for Oregon State. The Beaver forward is currently tied of the Pac-12 lead with six shots this season.

The Beavers will continue their season Friday, when they travel to take on Michigan State.
