2013 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic Bracket

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men’s basketball team will spend Christmas in Hawai’i when it competes in the 2013 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic Dec. 22, 23 and 25 at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

The Beavers will open the eight-team tournament against Akron on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 2:30 p.m. HST (4:30 p.m. PST) in a game that will be televised nationally on ESPNU.

The Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic will feature 12 games over the three days. Each team will compete in one game per day, advancing through a bracket-tournament format. The two teams that remain undefeated throughout will face off in a championship game on Christmas Day.

Other teams in the tournament include Boise State, George Mason, Hawai’i, Iowa State, Saint Mary’s and South Carolina. Six of the teams the Beavers could face in the Diamond Head Classic advanced to postseason play last season.

“This is an excellent field and a great opportunity for our team,” Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson said. “We hope Beaver fans will find a way to spend the Christmas holiday in Hawai’i to support our team in this outstanding tournament.”

Individual session tickets and all-session packages will go on sale to the public on Monday, Sept.23.

The family-friendly tournament and resort destination of Honolulu will host the teams to three days of play, practices and the unique spirit of Aloha from the Hawaiian Islands. Teams will also have the opportunity to attend the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl played during the same week. Additional information, including travel packages, can be found on the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic Web site at www.hawaiianairlinesdiamondheadclassic.com.

The Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic is owned and operated by ESPN Regional Television (ERT), a subsidiary of ESPN. ESPNU will carry eight of the tournament games, including all four first-round games. ESPN2 will air the third-place game and the championship game on Wednesday, Dec. 25, along with the one of the semifinals on Monday, Dec. 23.

USC won the inaugural tournament in 2009, followed by Butler in 2010, Kansas State in 2011 and Arizona in 2012.

Oregon State has fared well in recent non-conference tournaments, finishing second at the Legends Classic in 2011 and third at the 2K Sports Classic in 2012. The Beavers defeated Texas, 100-95, in overtime at the Legends Classic before falling to No. 18 Vanderbilt, 64-62, in a nail biter in the championship game. At the 2K Sports Classic, OSU suffered a hard-fought 65-62 loss to Alabama in the semifinals but bounced back to defeat Purdue, 66-58, in the consolation game.
