Carlyle and Cooks Set School Records at Husky Invite
Jan. 28, 2012
SEATTLE, Wash. - The Oregon State track and field program kicked-off their 2012 indoor track season this weekend when they traveled to Seattle, Wash. to compete at the Husky Invitational hosted by the University of Washington.
The Beavers team performance was highlighted by Laura Carlyle and Brandin Cooks both setting new school records in the one mile run and the 60 meter dash, respectively. Carlyle, who beat her own school record time of 4:50.90, competed in the mile run and finished third in section two with a time of 4:46.92 notching herself an NCAA provisional time.
"The team came out really well today," head coach Kelly Sullivan said. "We had two school records from Laura and Brandin. It was Brandin's first time competing for us and Laura was feeling a little sick. I usually don't run them when they have been a little sick, so she did that in less than ideal conditions."
Marsha Lampi competed in the 3,000 meter run and finished in fifth place in section one with a time of 10:01.97. That time moves her into fourth place on the Oregon State indoor all-time list for the 3,000 meter run.
Cooks finished second overall in the 60 meter dash with a school record time of 6.81. This was Cooks first appearance as a Beaver track athlete. Oregon State had several other athletes suit up for their first collegiate track meet including Sabrah de Voir, Kinsey Gomez, Lacey London and Latane Cox.
De Voir finished in 12th place for the Beavers in section one of the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:47.19. Haley Hunt, Cox and Hilary Sharpe all finished within seconds of each other in section one of the 3,000 meter run placing 13th, 14th and 15th respectively.
Gomez finished ninth in section two of the mile run with a time of 4:59.48. Her time of 4:59.48 was good enough to place her in sixth place on the Oregon State all-time list for the indoor mile run.
"Kinsey running the 4:59 was great, and it was a personal record for her," Sullivan said.
Obum Gwacham competed in the high jump for the men tying for fifth overall and notching a mark of 6-9.75. Kristin Oenning competed in the high jump for the women finishing with a mark of 5-3.75, which was a career best.
The Beavers will return to action February 10 when they return to Seattle, Wash. for the Husky Classic hosted by the University of Washington. Fans can follow along with the action by checking the live stats link under the women's track schedule at www.gohuskies.com.
